Teeth whitening

A large number of people around the world face the problem of stained and discolored teeth. This happens either due to genetics, aging, the medications we take, lifestyle or food habits like smoking, drinking coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, eating food that contain colors, etc. However, this problem can be solved, and teeth whitening can be achieved by different teeth whitening methods offered by dentistry. However, it must be noted that not all teeth whitening methods are equally effective or work for you.

Methods of Teeth Whitening

There are various teeth-whitening methods available, and some of them are more effective than others.

Professional teeth whitening

In-clinic teeth whitening/ professional teeth whitening is carried out under high supervision and has a very high chance of producing the best result compared to other whitening techniques in a relatively shorter period of time. Also, since the procedure involves a medical professional's presence and supervision, this is a relatively safe procedure, unlike other methods done at home.

Teeth whitening strips

Another solution to whiten the teeth at home is the teeth whitening strips. They are usually made of flexible plastic and, when inserted into the mouth, this strip molds itself according to the teeth of the individual using it. Though they offer results, teeth whitening strips can have very adverse effects on soft tissue if they are not used properly and as directed.

Teeth whitening toothpaste

Teeth-whitening toothpaste is one of the easiest ways to whiten teeth at home. However, the effectiveness of teeth whitening toothpaste is debatable, and because of their abrasive nature, they can induce sensitivity that not only affect the teeth but will also lead to gum recession.

Teeth whitening trays

Teeth whitening trays are a commonly used and safe way to treat teeth discoloration issues. If your dentist recommends using dental trays for you, he will mold a custom whitening tray that will suit your unique dental structure. You have to visit the dentist to place the trays. If you wish to use the whitening trays at home, your dentist will provide you the trays bleaching agent and complete instructions for proper trays application. The results of teeth whitening trays are usually seen in a short period of time and are long-lasting if appropriately maintained with personal oral hygiene.

Before undergoing the teeth-whitening procedure, understand that unhealthy teeth cannot be whitened. Also, consult a dentist and have an oral examination to decide on the whitening method that suits you the best. The result of teeth whitening is not permanent, but its effects can be made last longer with proper dental hygiene practices as suggested by your dentist.
